Supernova

Kathy made this fun Supernova quilt using all Kaffe fabrics.

She wanted the quilting to radiate from the star, so I made funky feathers.

Thanks Kathy!

Sunny Stars-Do Good Stitches

Here is the Sunny Stars laid all out on my design wall.

Let the quilting begin!

I used up a piece of binding I acquired from somewhere that was already cut, pressed and in a nice little roll. It's a bit bold, but figured there wouldn't be a quilt that would match it any better coming down the pike anytime soon. So on it went!

The final size was 60 by 47 inches with this 4 by 5 block layout.

This and the Scrappy Bear Paw quilt were the only two quilts our Nurture circle made last year. Our group is being re-formed right now and will start up again soon with a different charity. Half the members have left, and we will be getting 5 new sewers. I debated abandoning the group myself, it was pretty tempting, but then decided to keep going with it. It's all about the bigger picture and helping others with the time and talents I have. Plus, I really do enjoy seeing all the different quilts we make come together! Especially when the design is one of my own! So if anyone ends up using the Sunny Stars tutorial, I'd really love to see it!

Sunny Stars Block Tutorial

A bucket list item I’ve had for a while was to design my own quilt block for do.Good Stitches. So, with graph paper, pencil, and a 10-in-one color ink pen, I started drawing. This block could exist somewhere out there, but I haven’t seen it. This is not the most detailed tutorial, so if you have any questions, just shoot me a message.

For one 12 inch block you will need:

Yellow- 4-2.5 inch squares

1-   4.5 inch square (this can have just a little bit of yellow in it like block on right, or any color coordinating print you have will be fine.)

Green- 4-3 inch squares *OR* 2-4 inch squares

Pink- 4-3 inch squares *OR* 2-4 inch squares

Blue- 2-3 inch squares *OR* 1-4 inch square

4-4.5 by 2.5 inch rectangles (use same blue fabric here, everything else can be scrappy/mis-matched since they will be on the outside edge of block.)

White/Low volume- 10-3 inch squares *OR* 5-4 inch squares

I will assume we all know how to make HSTs 2 at a time with the smaller squares, but if making them 4 at a time is new to you, here’s a quick guide.

With right sides together (a light and a colored square), sew all the way around the 4-inch square.

Cut diagonally each way, and trim units to 2.5 inches square.

Layout your pieces accordingly.

 Sew units into rows.

Press seams open. Sew rows together.

Ta Daa!
